European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Additional Updates in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
