Local Law Enforcement
Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior official stated the incident made him without words and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
