Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address
During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his administration.
A Historic Mayor
The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.
Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:
- Free childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
